Reading & Writing — 2 modules
27 questions in 32 minutes per module. Short passages with one question each, ordered by domain: Information & Ideas, Craft & Structure, Expression of Ideas, Standard English Conventions.
Math — 2 modules
22 questions in 35 minutes per module, roughly increasing in difficulty. Algebra, Advanced Math, Problem-Solving & Data Analysis, Geometry & Trigonometry. Desmos is built in.
Adaptive by module
Performance on module 1 of a section sets the difficulty of module 2, and both modules feed your final section score.
Timing & scoring
About 2 hours 14 minutes total plus a 10-minute break. Scored 400–1600: Reading & Writing 200–800 and Math 200–800.

What is the SAT?
The SAT is a standardized college admissions test administered by the College Board. It is now fully digital, adaptive, and shorter — about 2 hours and 14 minutes — and is taken on a laptop, tablet, or Chromebook using the Bluebook™ testing app. Scores are used by U.S. colleges and universities as one factor in admissions and scholarship decisions.
Test format & sections
The Digital SAT has two sections: Reading and Writing, and Math. Each section is split into two equal-length, adaptive modules. Your performance on the first module determines the difficulty of the second. Reading and Writing has short passages with a single question each; Math covers algebra, advanced math, problem-solving & data analysis, and geometry & trigonometry — and a built-in Desmos graphing calculator is available on the entire Math section.
Scoring
The SAT is scored on a 400–1600 scale, combining a Reading and Writing score (200–800) and a Math score (200–800). Because the test is adaptive, both modules of a section contribute to your final section score. Scores typically release a couple of weeks after test day in your College Board account.
Registration
You register through your College Board account. Pick a test date, choose a nearby test center, and complete payment (fee waivers are available for eligible U.S. students). Late registration is available for a limited window with an extra fee. International fees differ from U.S. fees.
Bluebook™ app & devices
The SAT is delivered through Bluebook, College Board's digital testing app. Install and sign in to Bluebook before test day on an approved device — Mac or Windows laptops, iPads, or school-managed Chromebooks. If you don't have a device, you can request to borrow one from College Board.
What to expect on test day
Arrive at your test center by the reporting time on your admission ticket with your device fully charged, an acceptable photo ID, your admission ticket, and permitted items (pencils, an optional approved calculator, a snack, and water). Bluebook handles timing, breaks, and section transitions automatically.

Official practice includes full-length adaptive practice tests in Bluebook, downloadable linear (paper) practice forms, Official SAT Prep on Khan Academy®, and free peer tutoring at Schoolhouse.world. Combine those with focused review on your weakest skills to see the biggest score gains.
Accommodations & supports
Students with documented disabilities can request testing accommodations (extended time, breaks, assistive tech, and more) through Services for Students with Disabilities (SSD). English learners taking the SAT in the U.S. may also be eligible for supports like extra time and a translated test directions guide.
